Five students from The Storm King School had the opportunity to express their ideas on human rights through their artwork at An Artist’s Response to Human Rights–an annual exhibition celebrating the 30 Articles of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
The exhibition, organized since 2012 by the Orange County Arts Council, Cultural Affairs at SUNY Orange, and the Orange County Human Rights Commission, offers young artists a venue to express their feelings about the importance of human rights issues in today’s world through their artwork, essays, and poems.
SKS’ student-artists include Anna Volkova ’22, Miles Lucas ’21, Adela Arnal Marrun ’22, Rawnak Rahman ’21, and Conall Sweeney ’20.
The Storm King School has participated in the exhibition every year since its inception and is among seven other area high schools this year that have artwork on display at the SUNY Orange Newburgh and Middletown campuses during the month of December 2019. Accompanied by art teacher Megan Liggett, the students attended the exhibition’s opening reception held at the Middletown campus’ Orange Hall Gallery on Sunday, December 8, 2019. At the event, the students were recognized for their work and given certificates by the Orange County Human Rights Commission.
“We had a wonderful time at the opening reception and the students should be proud of their work. Preparing for the exhibition has been a meaningful learning experience for them; allowing them to channel their talent to help convey important messages about human rights that they believe in. I’m also pleased that as student-artists they get local exposure along with the works of other high school students in the region,” commented Ms. Liggett after the reception.
