From community events and trivia showdowns to African prints, fashion, and food, Black History Month at The Storm King School was filled with learning, fun, and unforgettable moments. Throughout February, the Black Student Union (BSU) brought creativity and joy to campus, transforming the cold of winter into a vibrant celebration of Black culture, achievement, and history.
The entire school community was engaged in a wide range of activities designed to educate and inspire all month. Multiple movie nights invited students to gather and reflect on films highlighting Black stories and voices, sparking conversations that continued beyond the big screen. Fun and connection continued with the Galentine’s gathering followed by Spirit Week, where themed dress down days helped to carry the celebration into classrooms and common areas.
From African Print Day and Decade Day to Black Freedom Flag Day, students and faculty embraced each theme, dressing accordingly with enthusiasm and smiles. To top off the month, the BSU Party brought music, food, games, and prizes to campus, adding even more excitement and camaraderie to the month’s festivities.
Amid the fun, learning remained at the heart of the celebration. Throughout the month, faculty members shared daily highlights influential figures and pivotal moments in Black history. At an All School Meeting, a large group of students delivered an impressive slideshow spotlighting prominent Black figures in business, music, and professional sports. Their presentations traced the growth and impact of Black investors in the modern economy–thoughtful work that underscored both historical progress and the continued influence of Black entrepreneurship and leadership today. The Young Professionals of Color Networking Event was another opportunity for students to build connections and explore pathways for future leadership and success.
A highlight of the month was the Black History–themed Formal Dinner and Fashion Show, where the dining hall transformed into a colorful runway. Students and faculty confidently modeled bold African prints and contemporary styles, blending tradition and modern expression in a powerful display of pride and creativity. The evening concluded with a spirited, schoolwide Kahoot! competition focused on Black history facts, filling the room with laughter, cheers, and friendly competition.
Black History Month on the Mountain was festive, engaging, and deeply meaningful. Special thanks go to the BSU and to all of the students, faculty, and staff who participated and helped bring these events to life. We are especially grateful to faculty members Ms. Gue-Waugh and Ms. Guerrier for their creativity, enthusiasm, and dedication to making this year’s Black History Month not only educational, but inspiring and truly memorable for the entire school community.
