Fall Parents Weekend at The Storm King School took place on Friday, October 13 through Monday, October 16. Nearly 40 families visited the campus to meet their children’s teachers and to get an inside look at the unique Storm King experience.
The Parents Weekend began with student activities and athletic practices as parents arrived on campus. Following lunch in the dining hall, families attended Parent-Teacher Conferences where they met with faculty members to discuss their childrens’ academic progress. The weather was perfect and the campus was bustling as families walked from building to building to attend their scheduled meetings.
As evening set in, parents made their way up to The Homestead for a reception hosted by Headmaster Jonathan Lamb. There, they sampled light fare and socialized with faculty members and visiting trustees. Following the reception, parents were encouraged to attend a formal dinner at Henderson Dining Hall before watching a student music, dance, and visual arts recital called “Presentations in Excellence” in the Walter J. Reade Theatre.
On Saturday, October 14, Parent-Teacher meetings continued throughout the morning, followed by a barbeque lunch on Ledoux Terrace. With no classes scheduled for Monday, October 16, many families took the opportunity to leave campus after Saturday’s athletic games to enjoy a long weekend with their children.
Friday evening’s recital was one of the highlights of the weekend with outstanding performances and artwork by our students. Theatre Director Anne Fulton, Music Director Alva Nelson, and Dance Instructor Jeanette Jacobson were all very pleased with the show. “Congratulations to all who performed in our Music and Dance Recital – it was a beautiful experience for all of us in the audience! There is so much talent at Storm King – those of us who work with our young artists are gratified to watch them grow and take artistic risks, even as we’re only two months into the school year,” explained Mrs. Fulton.
Parents Weekend also proved to be an important weekend for Storm King Athletics, with all four teams on the schedule emerging victorious. According to Athletic Director Joseph Graziosi, “Storm King Students Athletes were perfect this Parents Weekend while dominating their competition to cap off an excellent few days of activities, music, dance, and sports. It is always great to see them performing on stage and on the athletic field,” he said.
“On Friday, the girls soccer team routed a much improved team from Faith Christian Academy 4-1. The girls were led by Aryana Martin with two goals and Shania Roehrich and Zay Megias with one each. The girls dominated the run of play moving the ball well in the attack and played organized in the defensive end of the field.
Likewise, girls volleyball crushed EF International Academy on Friday winning all three games to take the match 3-0. Our girls played with exceptional determination to defeat a much bigger and more athletic opponent. Storm King served brilliantly to control the match but also has some excellent digs and communication during some long rallies.
On Saturday, Storm King Cross Country continued to run rampant over the competition by winning the Storm King Invitational. While there was a small field competing due to it being Parents Day at other schools, Storm King student-athletes were not deterred and, once again, controlled the race.
Saturday ended with the boys varsity soccer team overpowering NYMA 7-0. Our guys maintained possession of the ball for 85% of the match and dominated in every facet of the game. Alonso Gonzalez was brilliant with 4 goals including a beautiful bicycle goal with Miguel Regueral (2) and Juan Pablo Zuazua (1) also scoring. Many young players got the chance to showcase their skills as Storm King played more than 22 players in the match,” explained Mr. Graziosi.
