Head Coach for Girls Varsity Basketball

Tian Tang brings more than seven years of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels to The Storm King School. He most recently served as the interim head coach of the City College of New York’s women’s basketball program for the 2021-22 season, becoming the first Chinese-native basketball head coach in NCAA history.

Prior to joining CCNY, Tian’s collegiate coaching journey began as an assistant coach for the College of Mount Saint Vincent men’s basketball program in the 2016-17 season. The following season, he transitioned to the women’s game, serving as an assistant coach for the Western Connecticut State University women’s basketball team in 2017-18. He spent the next season as an assistant men’s basketball coach with Sarah Lawrence College, assisting the program in setting multiple school records including first conference tournament appearance, highest wins total and multiple all-conference selections. In 2019-20, Tian served as a graduate assistant with the Division II St. Thomas Aquinas College men’s basketball team as the Spartans won the ECC Championship and earned a No. 11 national ranking.

After time at St. Thomas Aquinas, Tian worked as the Boys Basketball Associate Head Coach at Ethical Culture Fieldston School and served as an assistant coach for his alma mater Manhattanville College’s women’s program.

Coach Tian played NCAA Division III basketball for NYU-Poly during his freshman season, and for Manhattanville College from 2013-2015. He earned his bachelor degree from Manhattanville College, majoring in business management and minoring in film studies and sports studies. He later earned two Master’s degrees from Manhattanville College, in sports management and marketing management communications.
