Storm King School students hailing from more than 20 nations had the chance to share their cultures and celebrate their diversity recently at Global Community Day. Global Community Day is a Storm King tradition highlighted by festivities, food, and fun with various cultural activities run by students at various locations across the campus.
To kick off the morning, students and faculty gathered in the Walter Reade Jr. Theatre for announcements while Mr. Freeman played the bagpipes. Next, Andrea L. ‘25, Matilda B. ‘24, and Adrian Y. ’27 took the stage to read poems in their native languages, Emily R. ‘24 performed a mesmerizing traditional dance, and a chorus of students sang “This Land is Your Land” in several languages. Before heading off to participate in the day’s activities, students from all the nations represented at SKS waved their national flags proudly at the annual International Flag Parade.
For the rest of the morning, various cultural activities continued around campus, including Turkish Coffee-making, Chinese Tea Ceremony, Tibetan sand mandala-making, music, Latino dance lessons, henna painting, origami, traditional embroidery, and a dodgeball tournament in the gym.
To conclude the festivities, the community shared an exquisite Global Lunch featuring delicious courses from different regions of the world, including beef empanadas, pozole, samosas, kofta, falafel, sushi, tempura shrimp, and more.
International Student Co-Coordinators Mrs. Centeno and Ms. Katz were very grateful for the support of everyone who helped make Global Community Day a success. “Global Community Day celebrates the fact that we are truly a diverse, global school and our spirit was displayed throughout the morning. We want to thank everyone who was involved, either working on or enjoying our activities. This day couldn’t be accomplished without all of you,” they commented after the event.
