Tian's collegiate coaching journey began as an assistant coach for the College of Mount Saint Vincent men’s basketball program in the 2016-17 season. The following season, he transitioned to the women’s game, serving as an assistant coach for the Western Connecticut State University women’s basketball team in 2017-18. He spent the next season as an assistant men’s basketball coach with Sarah Lawrence College, assisting the program in setting multiple school records including first conference tournament appearance, highest wins total and multiple all-conference selections. In 2019-20, Tian served as a graduate assistant with the Division II St. Thomas Aquinas College men’s basketball team as the Spartans won the ECC Championship and earned a No. 11 national ranking.

After time at St. Thomas Aquinas, Tian worked as the Boys Basketball Associate Head Coach at Ethical Culture Fieldston School and served as an assistant coach for his alma mater Manhattanville University's women's program. Most recently, he served as the interim head coach of the City College of New York’s women’s basketball program for the 2021-22 season, becoming the first Chinese-native basketball head coach in NCAA history.
