February has been action-packed for Storm King Athletics with the boys varsity and girls AA prep basketball teams in the midst of exciting winning streaks, and the varsity wrestlers bringing home results from the HVAL quads to be proud of.
The boys varsity basketball team lengthened their winning streak to 7 games and counting. Closing out January, the Cougars hosted Darrow for an exciting game of fast play on both sides. Storm King gained a 14-point lead in the first half, clinched by a field goal at the halftime buzzer by #12 Isiah H. ’24. In the second half, the Cougars came out roaring and never looked back. Strong defense and consisting pressure at the net gave the Cougars a resounding win, 71-44, at the final buzzer.
The team’s winning momentum continued through their next two games, tipping off against Oakwood on February 3 for a resounding win, 114-38, over the Lions followed by another victory over the NYMA Knights, 77-54, on February 7. Coach Luongo is very pleased with his team’s performance: “I feel like the team has reached a level of consistency in terms of effort and defensive performance. We are looking forward to entering the post season to see how we stack up against the rest of the teams in our class.”
The boys JV basketball team added another game to their roster on February 7, falling on the road at Woodstock, 31-39, after their win, 40-30, over the Marvelwood Pterodactyls on January 27.
Entering February on a 4-game winning streak, the girls AA prep basketball team has a lot to be proud of. “Three of our 4 recent came over other AA division opponents,” explained Coach Tang. “In the latest rankings published, Storm King is ranked #10 in AA for the first time in 3 years. Our current overall record is 10-9.”
Following their exciting win at McDuffie on January 27, the Cougars tipped off against Darrow for a comfortable win, 84-51, over the Ducks on January 31. Notable performances came from Elizabeth U. ’26 with 15 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds; Isabella S. ’24 with 10 points, 9 assists; Imani P. ’26 with 11 points, 12 rebounds; Marisa C. ’24 with 24 points, 20 rebounds, 5 assists.
Two days later the Cougars were on the road to Marianapolis Prep for a “thriller” of a game according to Coach Tang. “Overall, we could have done better defending the 3-point line during stretches and we gave up many offensive rebounds. The Cougars were down by 10 heading into the 4th quarter, but we won the 4th quarter to win the game, 54-50. We even managed to hold our opponents scoreless in the last 5:30 minutes.” Notable performances were Marisa with 24 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists; Isabella with 10 points, 4 rebounds; Elizabeth with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists.
The Cougar’s next game against Winchendon was also a nail-biter. “It was another 4th quarter comeback win, 51-48, for the Cougars. We had a lot of unforced turnovers on the offensive end, but our transition defense held up the entire game,” explained Coach Tang. “The last time we played them, Winchendon scored 69 points, but this time around, we held them to 48 points.” Notable performances were Imani with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks; Leni R. ’26 with 11 points, 3/6 from the 3-point line; Isabella with 9 points, 4 assists; Elizabeth with 7 points, 5 assists; Marisa with 10 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists.
The girls varsity basketball team showed perseverance and grit moving into February, adding two more competitions to their roster. On January 31, the Cougars traveled to Oakwood to tip off against the Lions where they demonstrated “some excellent teamwork on the court” according to Coach Sandstrom. “After a tough game, we ultimately fell, 11-42, but I’m proud of the girls’ determination.”
The following week, the Cougars hosted Northern Academy on February 6. “We suffered another loss, 10-16, but individual players had some great moments,” continued Coach Sandstrom. “Delfin A. ’25 scored 6 points and both Jessica W. ‘27 and Emma Y. ’26 racked up the rebounds. Juliana D. ’27 did a great job bringing the ball up and passing when she took over as point guard for Ines V. ’28.
The SKS Wrestlers traveled to Woodhall for their second round in the HVAL quads after a last-minute forfeit by NYMA. Coach Ciunga was ecstatic about the team’s overall performance with the Cougars “winning every matchup by points.” Taking on Woodhall, Tolik T. ’25 prevailed with a pin at 132 lbs. and David B. ‘26 pinned his opponent at 157 lbs. Next, SKS’ Joseph S. ’25 beat Marvelwood’s wrestler with a pin at 128 lbs. Moving on to face Hamden Hall, Joseph emerged victorious with another pin at 128 lbs. and David won with a pin at 157 lbs. The Cougars will carry their winning momentum to the third round of HVAL quads to held at Storm King on February 14th.
