This year, the Storm King School community embraced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s spirit of service, even in the face of snow and cold temperatures. On Monday, January 20, 2025, students and faculty commemorated the day by participating in a mix of service projects and reflective learning activities. After a delayed start, the afternoon began with students watching videos about Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights Movement, followed by discussions of Dr. King’s enduring legacy. This led to thoughtful conversations about civil rights, activism, and the continued relevance of Dr. King’s work today.
In the gymnasium building, the NY Blood Center Blood Drive saw an incredible turnout, with donors braving the weather to donate blood. This year’s drive collected over 50 pints of blood, potentially saving more than 150 lives. Special thanks to Mrs. Centeno and her team of student volunteers for working with the Blood Center and coordinating this essential part of the day’s service efforts.
On campus, students cleaned and organized various spaces, including the Student Center, Art Center, Theatre, Gym, Ogden, and Stillman. Service efforts extended to the Hudson Valley SPCA, where students cared for homeless animals and cleaned their areas. Volunteers at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center assisted with organizing supplies and cleaning closets, while others sorted and boxed food at the Hudson Valley Regional Food Bank. The Black Student Union (BSU) also made a significant impact by assembling 100 Self-Care Kit bags, which were donated to the La Iglesia del Buen Pastor Soup Kitchen, along with thoughtful messages of hope for those receiving the kits.
The day’s efforts didn’t stop there. Over 150 cards were written for various causes, including Amy’s Ray of Sunshine for cancer patients, mental health facility residents, and first responders. In addition, a group of students created a remarkable slideshow that will be shared throughout February in honor of Black History Month, ensuring that the lessons from Dr. King’s life and the Civil Rights Movement continue to inspire others.
A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who contributed to making this year’s MLK Day of Service a success, braving the snow to lend their hands and hearts. The day demonstrated that, true to Dr. King’s legacy, even small acts of kindness and service can make a big difference.
