At The Storm King School, student clubs have always been an essential component of the overall Storm King experience. Whether organized by the school or conceived and run by students, clubs provide an avenue for self-expression, discovering new passions, developing leadership skills, making like-minded friends, and having fun.
One such club, SKS’ Data Science Club, kicked off their first meeting of the spring semester recently by hosting a very special guest. Professor and Electrical Engineer Dr. Max (Chong) Li joined the meeting virtually to share valuable insights on the latest trends in artificial intelligence. Professor Li is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University.
Led by sophomore Junyu Steven C. ’27, the session was a great opportunity for the club to learn from an expert in the field and explore how data science is shaping the future. “Professor Li’s presentation was really insightful and engaging. He shared his view on the trends in AI and data science in the future by sharing his own experiences and stories,” explained Steven. “We had many students attend our first meeting and they seemed very interested throughout. They had a lot of questions to ask in the Q&A session.” Ethan W. ’26, a fellow club member commented: “Professor Li’s speech was clear, precise, and strong. It addressed how high school teenagers can use and accommodate AI appropriately. I was really impressed.”
According to Steven, the Data Science Club has more interesting events and activities in the works this spring. “Our future goals for the Data Science Club include organizing more expert guest lecturers like Professor Li as well as college students who major in this field. We also want to tackle hands-on projects related to school data problems in cooperation with the school administration.”
It’s already clear that the Data Science Club is off to a great start this year by providing students with opportunities to explore data science, engage with experts, and develop skills for the future. By empowering them to learn and lead in this dynamic field, the club is sure to have an exciting semester ahead. We can’t wait to see what’s in store!
