The Cougars are practicing and playing hard this month with the girls prep basketball team on a 4-game winning streak and counting, the boys varsity basketball team adding another strong win over Marvelwood to their record, and the SKS Fencers traveling to their first Epee competitions of the season.

After their resounding victory over Darrow earlier this month, the Cougars hosted Rhode Island’s Rocky Hill Country Day School on January 13, where their winning momentum carried Storm King to a comfortable win over the Mariners, 67-38. “We held their top 3 scorers under their averages and our pressure really got to them starting in the 2nd quarter,” commented Coach Tang. Notable performances were Elizabeth U. ’26 with 17 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists; Leni R. ’26 with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 4/6 from the 3-point line; Marisa C. ’24 with 15 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists.

One day later, the Cougars were on the road to compete in the She Got Game Classic where the Cougars tipped off against New Hampshire’s Holderness School.  According to Coach Tang, the team started off slow, going down by 15 in the first half. However, Storm King rallied after halftime to take back control in the 3^rd quarter, cruising ahead of the Blue Bulls with an 18-point lead, ultimately winning 51-46 over the Bulls. Marisa C. ’24, who scored 21 points, with 6 assists, and 16 rebounds, received the MVP of the game award from the tournament.

To extend their now 4-game winning streak, the Cougars added another victory over Greenwich Country Day, 54-47, on January 17. Storm King aims to keep the winning going on the road to Winchendon on January 20.

Following a decisive win over Darrow earlier in January, the boys varsity basketball team traveled to Rocky Hill on January 13. It was a tough game for the Cougars who racked up 42 points early in the game, but lost momentum against a strong opponent to end with a loss, 76-42, at the final buzzer. The Cougars weren’t fazed by the setback, hitting the court running at Marvelwood on January 17. Storm King’s formidable defense and excellent teamwork on the court resulted in another strong win for the Cougars over the Pterodactyls, 81-63. Next up, the Cougars travel to Oakwood to face the Lions on January 20.

The boys JV team also traveled to Rocky Hill on January 13 where the Cougars fought hard throughout the game, ultimately falling to the Mariners, 25-80, but gaining important court experience.

The SKS Wrestlers were back on the mat after returning from winter break with nearly one month since their last competition. Their first January bout took place on the 13^th at Connecticut’s Salisbury School. The Storm King team wrestled well, but ultimately fell with an overall score of 18-60 in favor of the Knights. Heading into their next competition at NYMA, half of the Cougar wrestlers were out due to illness and injury resulting in another loss. The Cougars will work hard to rally at the upcoming HVAL Quads to be held at Marvelwood on January 24.

The SKS Fencers had their first competitions of the season this month. First, the Cougars traveled to the Freehold Fencing Academy in Freehold, New Jersey, to compete in their Womens and Mens Senior Unrated Epee on January 12. In the women’s epee, 7 of the 15 competing fencers were from SKS, with Rosario S. ’25 placing 8^th, Emily K. ’26 placing 10^th, Isabel G. ‘26 at 11^th, Eva G. ‘26 at 12^th, Ahane S. ’26 at 13^th, Christine S. ’24 at 14^th, and Nyla A. ’25 at 15th.

Two days later, the Cougars traveled to Bucks County Academy of Fencing  (BCAF) in Lamberville, New Jersey, for the BCAF Mixed Division II Epee competition. Out of 28 competing fencers, Dongwoo R. ’26 placed 21^st and Antonio M. ’26 placed 23^rd.

Next, the fencers will travel to the Manchen Academy of Fencing to participate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Lunge for Life Epee.
