Storm King Athletics has a lot to be proud of this fall! All of our teams displayed outstanding sportsmanship and improved their game throughout the season, and two Cougar teams brought home Hudson Valley Athletic League (HVAL) championship trophies.
Congratulations to the boys varsity soccer team, who were at the top of their game all season. After a slow start, the Cougars began a long-running winning streak and never looked back. In their final week of league play, the team enjoyed two shut-out wins against NYMA, 10-0, and Marvelwood, 7-0, before moving on to the HVAL semifinal match on Wednesday, November 9. In the semifinal, the #1 Cougars faced the NYMA Knights, who were set on victory after their loss to SKS the previous week. However, the Cougar momentum was unstoppable, allowing SKS to cruise to another resounding win, 9-1, over their historic rival. The win advanced them to the final championship game, where the Cougars faced the Darrow Ducks.
“After a year of waiting for redemption following last season’s disappointing loss in the finals, the boys went out on Monday afternoon with nothing but business on their minds,” explained Coach Bennett. “We started off neck and neck with Darrow but ended the first half losing 2-1. However, the Cougars rallied at halftime and came out firing on all cylinders in the second half. We were able to finish the game with a beautiful win, 6-3. The boys deserved it for all the hard work they put in this season. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The Cougars’ momentum continued when they faced the Pterodactyls again in the HVAL semifinal game on Wednesday, November 9, giving the girls a 5-0 victory and a shot at the championship trophy. The skill and determination of the team proved unbeatable when the girls traveled to Hoosac to face the Owls for the championship on Saturday, November 12. After a tough match and strong defensive play on both sides, the Cougars’ winning wave prevailed, edging out their opponent by a score of 2-1 for possession of the 2022 championship trophy. Advancing to the HVAL semifinal game, the Cougars faced the NYMA Knights again on Wednesday, November 9. Despite a strong effort and respectable play, the Cougars left the court with a 0-3 score and their heads held high. Kudos, Cougars!

After finishing as #2 in their league earlier in the month, the SKS harriers were on the road to Marvelwood for the New England Prep School (NEPSAC) Division IV cross country championships on Saturday, November 12. Despite heavy rain the night before, the team ran under clear skies with temperatures in the mid-50s. Senior Edward I. ’23 placed 9th overall out of 146 starting runners in the Varsity Boys 5K with a time of 18:39. Coach Finn-Atkins was very pleased with the teams’ performance at the championship meet and throughout the season: “It was really exciting to see our runners with so many talented high school runners from across New England, and we are already looking forward to going back next fall.”
