As November begins, two Cougar teams wrapped up their competitive seasons, and the others are playing their final games before the Hudson Valley Athletic League (HVAL) championship tournaments later this month.

The Storm King harriers concluded their season at the HVAL Championship meet held at Darrow on Wednesday, November 2. The boys team arrived intent on bringing home the HVAL Trophy for the 6th consecutive competition year. With several boys out due to injuries, and the girl’s top runner also out, the Cougars ran hard-fought races, with the boys finishing as the runner-up to Oakwood Friends (#1) with an average time of 23:32.14.

Coach Finn-Atkins reported that individual Storm King runners did very well, with Edward I. ‘23 placing first in the race overall at 19:24.94, Kayan M. ’23 placing 3rd at 21:09.97, and Vincent I. ‘24 placing 8th at 22:13.60. For the girls, Evangeline G. ’26 placed 9th with a time of 29:38.35. Although league competition has concluded, the boys and girls cross country teams will continue to train up until the NEPSAC District IV Championship meet is scheduled for Saturday, November 12.

As their whirlwind season winds down, the Cougars hosted the Darrow Ducks on Saturday, October 29, with home advantage at their side.  Coach Bennett commented that the team played “incredibly well,” bringing them to their 8th consecutive win, 4-1, over the Ducks.

To kick off November, the Cougars hosted historic rival NYMA on Wednesday, November 2. Coach Bennett reported that the team executed a well-played game resulting in a resounding win for the boys, 10-1, with most of the players seeing time on the field. For their final league match of the season, the Cougars will travel to Marvelwood on Saturday, November 5, to face the Pterodactyls before advancing to the HVAL quarterfinal game on Monday, November 7. Go Cougars!!

Following a disappointing loss to the Hoosac Owls, the girls varsity soccer team aimed for redemption when they traveled to the Harvey School to face the Cavaliers on Saturday, October 29. The Cougars got off to a rough start and played down by 3 goals well into the game. To bring the team back, Arianna L. ‘24 and Alejandra C. ’23 scored two goals to end the match with a 3-2 score. According to Coaches Ciunga and Fulton, the team’s defensive enthusiasm was commendable and helped them end the game on a more positive note.  In their next match versus EF International the following Wednesday, November 2, the girls fought hard once again and kept their spirits high despite another loss, 2-1. Now, the Cougars’ sights are set on winning when they host the Marvelwood Pterodactyls on Saturday, November 5.

Closing out October, the girls varsity volleyball team played a great game and enjoyed a win, 3-1, when they traveled to Kingswood Oxford to play the Marie Philip School for the Deaf on Friday, October 28. With the weekend off and plenty of extra practice, the Cougars’ continued their winning momentum on Wednesday, November 2, hosting NYMA. Excellent play at the net and strong serving resulted in another winning score of 3-1 over the Knights. In their last league game of the season, the girls will face Wooster on Saturday, November 5, before they travel to the HVAL quarterfinals next week.
