With their first month of competition behind them, the Storm King Cougars kicked off the month of October with even more hard work, great sportsmanship, and outstanding play.
GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL
The girls varsity volleyball team had mixed results in their first week of October competition. On Saturday, October 1, the Cougars hosted Kent School in a difficult match falling 0-3 against a strong opponent. When the girls traveled to NYMA on Tuesday, October 4, their determination to bring home a win resulted in a grueling 5-set game. Despite their efforts, the Cougars fell to the Knights in the final set. Despite their setbacks the team came out strong when they hosted the Hoosac the next day, Wednesday, October 5. Strong play at the net and some excellent serving brought the Cougars a much-anticipated win over the Owls, 3-0. Next up, the girls will travel to the Millbrook School on Wednesday, October 12.
“The team’s record does not reflect the tremendous growth of the athletes in the sport,” commented Coach Cervantes after their win against Hoosac. “Each player is relatively new to the game and has become a quick expert in both skill and strategy. Each time we step on the court, we are more and more in control of our own destiny. Post-grad Ciany C. ’23 is both a vocal asset and a physical presence on the floor. As a first-time setter she has gained a strong understanding of running the team’s offense. The growth of junior Maddie D. ’24 as a returning player and leader is also awesome to watch. I’m very proud of each one of our players.”

BOYS VARSITY SOCCER
After closing out September with a win versus Oakwood, the boys varsity soccer team kept the momentum going when they traveled to Darrow on Saturday, October 1. “It was all around an incredible day,” commented Coach Bennett. “We won 4-2 on the road and controlled the run of play for the entire match. They were all great plays. Our first goal by Jaime K. ’25 scored on a diving header. He landed in the goal afterwards with the ball! Senior Rhyan R. ’23 followed up with 1 goal on a PK and freshman Ren T. ’26 scored 2 goals assisted by Emilio J. ’27 and Rhyan.”
The Cougars hope to continue their recent winning streak when they travel to EF International Academy to face the Storm on Saturday, October 8.

GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER
After a few cancellations, the girls varsity soccer team played once this week, traveling to Connecticut’s Christian Heritage School in stormy weather on Wednesday, October 5. “The girls played hard and fought to the end in a tough, rainy match against Christian Heritage,” commented Coach Fulton following a disappointing loss, 0-4, to the Kingsmen.
The Cougars will play for redemption when they host the Hoosac Owls on Wednesday, October 12.

BOYS/GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
October was off to a quiet start for the SKS harriers following their success at the Storm King Invitational to end September. The Cougars have been training consistently with Coach Finn-Atkins while taking advantage of two days off from competition and one cancellation this week. On the horizon, both the boys and girls teams will travel to the NYMA Invitational on Wednesday, October 12.
