After a brief lull in the action at the start of the month, the Cougars stayed on top of their game during October in nearly every category. It has been a great showing for Storm King as regular fall competition winds down and sights are turned toward the winter season.
Boys Varsity Soccer
After a week-long hiatus, soccer competitions resumed on Saturday, 10/9, with Boys Varsity Soccer taking a loss against Hoosac School. However, the team fought hard against the Owls, with defensive player Michael ’23 stepping up in a formidable showing. The Cougars quickly redeemed themselves with a 5-1 victory against local rival New York Military Academy (NYMA) on Wednesday, 10/13.
After a weather cancellation versus Millbrook, the boys varsity soccer team faced Harvey School on Wednesday, 10/20, tying the score 2-2. Michael ’23 was voted player of the game by the opposing coach for his tenacious defensive effort, and scoring our first goal off of a PK. Rhyan ’23 then scored the equalizer with 3 minutes left in the game to tie the match.
Next up, the boys faced Forman School on Saturday, 10/24. The team started slow and ended up down 3-0 with 9 minutes left in the first half. They battled back to get within 1 goal before halftime with a quick one-two score in the final minutes, both by Rhyan ’23. The second half saw possession dominated by the Cougars as Rhyan netted two more goals, followed by Arturo ’23 and Hugo ’23 with one goal apiece. The final score for SKS against Forman was 6 to 4.
The boys varsity soccer team took the field again at Marvelwood on Wednesday, 10/27, earning the win from the Pterodactyls 7-0. Their coaches commented the team was organized and in control of the entire match-up. The boys JV soccer team followed suit Wednesday with a win against Woodhall School 5-1. Coach Ciunga said, “It was a great effort by every member of the team.”

Girls Varsity Soccer
Girls Varsity Soccer kicked off October with back-to-back games, facing Hoosac on Tuesday, 10/12, followed by Frederick Gunn School on Wednesday, 10/13. After tough competition, the girls ultimately fell to their opponents 1-5 and 8-1 respectively, but their coaches commented that the girls played two excellent games. Despite the negative scores, the team was working together and several players were coming out of their shells and sticking to plays they had been practicing.
On Saturday, 10/16, the team continued to showcase excellent performance on their home field, ultimately dropping a very close contest with EF Academy 2-3. According to their coaches, the teams were well matched and kept a close score until the last few minutes of the game. Redemption soon followed when the girls hit the field in their second face-off against Oakwood Friends. Both teams played 9 v 9 throughout the match and ended the contest with a 6-0 win for Storm King.
The team’s winning momentum continued at their next outing against Marvelwood on Wednesday, 10/27. The girls took the win with an outstanding performance 7-2. Girls Varsity Soccer will conclude the month facing Harvey School on Saturday, October 30.

Girls Varsity Volleyball
For Girls Varsity Volleyball, the first half of October was marked by two games against EF Academy. On Wednesday, 10/13, the girls fought hard in a back-and-forth match, winning a nail-biter first game 31-29, then dropping the second game 17-25, and rebounding 25-18 in the third game with steady gameplay. After losing the 4th game 19-25 due to unfocused play, the match went to a 5th game where the Cougars took the loss 8-15.
Redemption was quick when the girls emerged victorious versus EF Academy on Saturday, 10/16, after a close 3-2 series of games on their home court. SKS warmed up slowly, winning the first game 25-20, and dominated the second game winning 25-12. The Cougars lost the third game 22-25 after numerous service errors, and then lost a nail-biter 4th game 26-28, forcing a 5th game showdown to 15 points. SKS pulled out the win, 18-16, with lots of spectator support from both schools.
Next up, Girls Varsity Volleyball played away on Wednesday, 10/20, at Hoosac School, dropping a tough match 1-3 after a valiant effort. Wednesday, 10/27, was the team’s Senior Recognition day as they faced Millbrook School on their home court. Although they lost a tough match 0-3, the highlight of the day was acknowledging the seniors who have all worked hard at their own individual levels to improve their volleyball skills, and to become better athletes and better people in our Storm King Community.

Cross Country
As always, the boys and girls cross country teams stayed at the head of their fields in October, bringing home two more invitational trophies. The first was won on Wednesday, 10/13, at the New York Military Academy’s Annual Invitational. In a perfect showing, SKS runners took the top 6 places. The lone female runner for SKS also took 1st place in the girls’ race. SKS junior, Edward I., set the course record, running 17:55 on the 3.25-mile trail. He eclipsed the old course record of Matthew M. (NYMA), who achieved a time of 18:15.1 during the 2017 HVAL Championship
Next, at the Marvelwood Invitational on Wednesday, 10/27, boys from the Storm King squad captured 6 out of the top 10 spots, with SKS runners placing 1st, 2nd, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th. On the girls side, the Cougars captured 1st and 3rd places with excellent times. It was a great day for all on the Marvelwood course.
