The Storm King School Student Art Show is back at 2 Alices Coffee Lounge! The walls at the popular Cornwall, New York venue are adorned with works by our talented AP Studio Art, Advanced Studio Art, Photography, and Digital Design students through March 28, 2022.
The official opening of the show took place on Thursday, March 3. Storm King community members, including students, faculty, and parents, gathered to view the art. At the same time, they shared coffee and conversation and enjoyed live music by SKS senior Ha V. ’22. The lounge quickly filled up with visitors eager to discuss the pieces with the students.
Head of School Jonathan Lamb was one of the first guests to arrive and congratulate the students on their works. “It’s very important that they have the opportunity to share their talent with the local community once again this year. Congratulations to all of our student artists on their work this year,” he commented.
Senior Jianglan L. ’22 used the story behind a Chinese proverb as the inspiration behind her three-dimensional work in the multi-media category called ‘Back on Track.’ “I used the broken piece of pottery as the main element of my artwork. I am also interested in textile design, and I have a piece on display in that category as well,” she explained.
Junior Ada A. ’23 talked about her pencil and ink drawing mirroring the intricate motifs on the ceiling of the Hagia Sophia in her home country of Turkey. “I have always been amazed by the details and patterns done by the ancient artists, inspiring me to draw them in black and white.”
Visual Arts Department Chair John Carruthers commented that he was very impressed with the level of work the students produced. “They have all created great art in various categories. I encourage everyone in our community to visit the show and support them,” he explained.
The exhibition at 2 Alices will run through March 28, 2022. In April, the students’ works will be brought back to campus in time for the upcoming SKS Spring Arts Weekend, scheduled to take place April 29 through May 1.
